Brief History of the Department
The creation of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in 1990/2000 academic session led to the establishment of Department of Animal Production and Health Sciences now Animal Science in the same year under the leadership of the first Dean of the Faculty, Prof. A, A. Agboola. Past leadership of the Department are: Dr. A.O. Fasuyi- Coordinator (2002-2003), Dr. F.A.S. Dairo- Coordinator (2003-2004), Dr. F.A.S. Dairo- Ag. Head (2004-2005), Dr. A.O. Fasuyi- Coordinator (2005-2007), Dr. F.A.S. Dairo- Ag. Head (2008-2210), Dr. A.O. Fasuyi- Ag. Head (2010-2012), Dr.. P.A. Aye- Ag. Head (2012-2013), Prof. F.A.S. Dairo- Head (2013-2014), Dr. S.O. Olawumi- Ag.Head (2014-2016), Dr. J.T. Ogunlade- Ag.Head (2016-2018), Dr.S.O.K. Fajemilehin- Ag.Head (2018-2020), Dr. (Mrs.) M.K. Adegun – Ag.Head (2020-2022) and the current Ag. Head of Department, Dr. (Mrs.) O.F. Alamuoye. (August 2022 till date).
Our Philosophy
The philosophy of the Department is to produce graduates who have acquired appropriate knowledge and skills in techniques, learning and conducts in the areas of Animal Science, as may be necessary for the upliftment of social and economic needs of our time.
The curriculum is structured to meet the demands of academic activities and other educational resources, training, research and services for application to other similar situations locally and internationally
The Objectives
Objectives of the Department
The programme objectives are to produce graduates are:
- To produce graduate farmers in Animal Science with the necessary knowledge and skills towards self-employment
- Technically-equipped with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in Animal Science.
- Graduate who can easily exploit Animal resources for industrial and domestic uses and also for the improvement of the environment.
- To work as professionals in Animal Science in both the private and public sectors of the economy,
General services and academic programmes
The academic programmes and institutional activities of the Department are facilitated through tutorials, bench work and the laboratories for the award of Bachelor in Agricultural Science option in Animal Science and Postgraduate degrees. The running and management of the Department depends on the following organs and administrative structure:
- The Head of Department and Chairman of Departmental Board of Examiners.
- The Department constitutes various committees to assist the Head of Department; such as the Academic Staff Review, Non-Teaching Staff Review, Admission Matters (under graduates and post-graduates), Examination Matters, Research Fund Management, Journal and Handbook Publication, Farm Management and Seminars and other statutory and special matters.
