Faculty of Agric Sc

Brief History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was established in 1999/2000 to meet the need for the training of a high-level workforce in agriculture for the development of natural resources in Ekiti State, which is mainly agrarian. The need to establish a College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in the University was mooted at the take-off of the University in 1982 but could not materialize at the time. The First and Pioneer Dean of the Faculty was Prof. A. A. Agboola (1999–2002)

Four departments were created in 1999/2000 when the Faculty started. These were:

  • Agricultural Economics and Extension Services
  • Animal Production and Health Sciences
  • Crop, Soil and Environment Sciences and
  • Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Management.

In the 2015/2016 academic session, two departments (iii & iv) were demerged. The Faculty since then has had six departments approved by the University Senate, until recently when the Food Science and Nutrition Department was added to make seven. These are:

  1. Agricultural Economics and Extension Services (AEE)
  2. Animal Sciences (ANS)
  3. Crop, Horticulture and Landscape Design (CHL)
  4. Fisheries and Aquaculture Management (FAM)
  5. Food Science and Nutrition (FSN)
  6. Forest Resources and Wildlife Management (FWM)
  7. Soil Resources and Environment Management (SRE).

The Faculty enjoys massive support from the Staff Development Programme, with about 5 members currently on study leave within and outside the country on sponsorship either by the University or TETFund. At the same time, some have returned to their duty post. Similarly, attendance at learned conferences and workshops is graciously supported. New faculty members have been recruited into the different disciplines/departments to meet the ever-expanding knowledge base of the Faculty.
