Brief History of the Department
The Department of Soil Resources and Environmental Management came into existence on 27th April, 2016 when the Senate of Ekiti State University approved the splitting of the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences into two new departments viz Soil Resources and Environmental Management and Crop Horticulture and Landscape Design.
The Department has produced numerous notable alumni spread all over the world in several fields such as academics, industries, governments, ministries, civil and public services. The Department is today recognised as a leading Department in Nigeria.
Academic staff of the Department from its inception included; Prof. O. J. Ayodele, Prof. A. S. Fasina, Prof. J. O. Aruleba, Prof. A. S. Ajayi, Prof. O. S. Shittu, Prof. S. O. Omotoso, Dr. G. O. Awe, Dr (Mrs) F. O. Adeyemi, Mr. O. O. Nurudeen and Dr. A. A. Ayodele, and Dr E. O. Alabi as Adjunct Lecturer.
Mr. A. O. Oso was the only Technologist at the inception in the Department of Soil Resources and Environmental Management. The Department has its own laboratory with the following equipment; Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Gas Chromatography with Printer, Ultra-Visible Spectrophotometer, Autoclave, Bomb Calorimeter, Orbital shaker, Conductivity meter, Refrigerated Centrifuge etc.
Currently, the Department has the following academic staff; Prof. J. O. Aruleba, Prof. A. S. Ajayi, Prof. S. O. Omotoso, Dr. G. O. Awe, Dr (Mrs) F. O. Adeyemi, Mr. O. O. Nurudeen and Dr. A. A. Ayodele, and Dr E. O. Alabi as Adjunct Lecturer. The current head of Department is Prof. S. O. Omotoso.
The Department run Postgraduate programmes in the following area of specializations; Soil Fertility Management, Soil Survey and Pedology, Environmental Soil Science, Soil Chemistry, Soil Mineralogy, Soil Physics, Soil and Water Conservation, Soil Microbiology.
Our Philosophy
The philosophy of the Department is to produce graduates who have acquired the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and competencies necessary for productive agriculture and thereby achieve social and economic development and environmental stability. The problem-solving functions are structured to meet the academic and research needs and the re-training of specialists in renewable resources management. These are with a view to finding adaptable solutions to the problems associated with human quest for food, income generation and sustainable environment.
Objectives of the Department:
The programme objectives are to produce graduates who are:
- technically-equipped with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in land, soil resources and environmental management;
- capable of managing the soil for sustainable crop production and environmental stability;
- able to carry out in-depth research in soil and environmental resources management for the overall improvement in agricultural productivity.
- provide a foundation for acquiring knowledge in specialized areas of Soil Science at higher levels.
- make students aware of the relevance of soil science in various ways in meeting the manpower needs of the Country.

Our mission is to produce graduates in agriculture with sufficiently sound theoretical background, practical experience through skill acquisition and adequate exposure to the use of modern facilities for self-reliance in agricultural enterprises.
