PROF. FAGBEMI, TAYO NATHANIEL
HOD, Food Science adn Nutrition
Professor Fagbemi was born on 14th February 1955 at Ile-Oluji in Ile-Oluji / Oke-Igbo Local Government of Ondo State. He attended L. A. Pry School Agunla and L. A. Pry School, Ile-Oluji (1961-1967), Gboluji Anglican Grammar School, Ile-Oluji (1968-1972) and Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure (1973 – 1974). He also attended University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo Univesity), (1974 – 1979), University of Ibadan (1984) and The Federal University of Technology Akure (2004). He holds B.Sc. Food Science and Technology, M.Sc. Food Technology and Ph.D Food Chemistry.
He started his career as Lecturer III in 1980 with The Federal Polytechnic, Akure which later became The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti and grew to the position of Chief Lecturer in 1997.
He transferred his services to The Federal University of Technology in 1998 as a Senior Lecturer and became a professor in year 2007. He gave his inaugural lecture in December 2015 titled ‘Food Processing Guaranteeing Food, Nutrition and Health Security‘. He is a professor of Food Science and Technology. His area of research is product development of functional foods; he has patents. His current research focus is ‘Food Pilot plant development’. He has served as external examiner to many universities and polytechnics and principal or alternate principal researcher in some research grants. He has won the following research grants or member of the team that won the grants:
(i) STEP B: Sustainable Production, Processing and Utilisation of Maize, Cassava and Cowpea for Food Security in Nigeria (($4,499,976.87) i.e. (#674, 996, 530.00)) (Alternate principal researcher) 2011- 2013. Completed
(ii) TETFUND Research grant 2019 (#1,689,200.00) Principal researcher; Report submitted
(iii) TETFUND Research grant 2017 (#1, 615,000.00) Co-researcher; Report submitted
(iv). NLNG 2022 Research award on ‘Development of process pilot plant for plantain flour’ an award of $100,000.00 (One hundred US Dollars) endowed by Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas
(v) Patent: Development of process pilot plant for plantain flour
He is a Fellow of Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (FNIFST) and Member of Institute of Public Analyst of Nigeria (MIPAN). He has supervised twenty PhD students, and Twenty five masters students. He has over 110 articles in peer reviewed local and international impact factored peer review journals. He is a former Head of Department and Director of academic planning. He is currently the Director STEP B projects (Centre of Excellence in Food Security) and Accreditation.
He was a visiting professor to University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State and Mountain Top University Makogioba Ogun State. He is widely travelled and has attended many national and international conferences. He is a consultant to many food industries. He is married to Mrs Florence Omotomike Fagbemi and the marriage is blessed with children.
