Brief History of the Department

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services, established in 2001, began with four lecturers: Mr. I.B Oluwatayo, Mrs. O.M. Apata, and Mrs. A.B. Sekumade, all of whom have subsequently become professors. Mr. C.A. Ajewole was also part of the pioneer lecturers. They taught Agricultural Economics and Extension courses at the 200-level and were coordinating the academic activities of the department, while Dr. A.S. Fasina was the Dean and acting Head of Department until 2011. Professor O.M. Apata was the first substantive Head of Department from 2011 to 2013, followed by other senior lecturers namely Prof. A.B. Sekumade (2013-2015) and Prof. G.M. Adebo (2015-2017). Other lecturers who had directed the department were Late Prof. F.M. Oluwatusin (2017-2019), Prof. S.O.W Toluwase (2019-2021), and Dr. A. Ajiboye (2021-2023). The department runs postgraduate studies in all aspects of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services, and has produced Masters and Ph.D. graduates that have spread all over the world.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department has a mission of providing all the necessary functions that a department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services (AEE) can offer to speed up the process of development. In other Words, it is aimed at pursuing a policy of identifying and resolving problems that hinder development in the defined area. Basically, the Department has an underlying philosophy of turning out graduates who have acquired skills in Learning and characters, necessary for the upliftment of social, economic, and environmental needs of our time. The problem-solving functions are structured to meet academic activities and other educational resource, training, research and services. These are used in curricula design and development which are imparted to students for applications to other similar situation that is outside the immediate vicinity of the Department

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To prepare the student for work as professional Agricultural Economist in both the private and public sectors of economy. 
  2. To broaden the intellectual horizon of candidates in Agribusiness and Produce management.
  • To provide theoretical and methodological tools for research in the various fields of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services.
  1. To provide high quality graduate Agricultural Economist Rural Development as instructors for undergraduate programmes in the universities and other institution of higher learning in Nigeria.
