Brief History of the Department

The creation of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in 1990/2000 academic session led to establishment of four departments. The Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences was one of the four departments and later split into Departments of Crop, Horticulture and landscape Design and Department of Soil Resources and Environmental Management in 2016/2017 academic session. Past leadership of the Department of Crop, Horticulture and Landscape Design are: Dr. A.E. Salami – Ag. Head (2016-2018), Prof. B. Osundare – Head (2018-2020), Dr. O.O. Longe – Ag. Head (2020-2021), Prof. O.O. Longe – (2021-2023), Prof. (Mrs) A.A. Oso – Head (2023 till Date).

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The underlying philosophy of the Department of Crop, Horticulture and Landscape Design is to produce graduates who have acquired comprehensive theoretical knowledge, practical skills and character required for engaging in productive agriculture and thereby achieving social and economic development and sustainable environment. The curriculum and its problem-solving functions are structured to meet the needs of academic activities, training, research and other services locally and internationally.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The objectives of the department are to produce graduates who:

  1. are technically-equipped with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in the science and technology of tropical crop production and management, horticulture and landscape design;
  2. have acquired the entrepreneurial skills needed for investment in and managing large-scale farm enterprises; and
  • are capable of carrying out in-depth agricultural research in crop production and horticulture for the overall improvement in agricultural productivity and sustainable environment.
  1. will be adequately equipped to effectively disseminate information and educate the society about the importance of agriculture.

 

General services and academic programmes

The academic programmes and institutional activities of the Department are facilitated through tutorials, bench work and the laboratories for the award of Bachelor in Agricultural Science options in Crop Production and Horticulture/Landscape Design Postgraduate degrees. The running and management of the Department depend on the following organs and administrative structure:

  1. The Head of Department and Chairman of Departmental Board.

The Department constitutes various committees to assist the Head of Department; such as the Academic Staff Review, Non-Teaching Staff Review, Admission Matters (under graduates and post-graduates), Examination Matters, Research Fund Management, Journal and Handbook Publication, Farm Management and Seminars and other statutory and special matters.
