BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department came to existence after resource verification by National University Commission (NUC) in October and subsequent approval in November 2023. The first set of students are being admitted in 2023/2024 session. Prof Tayo Fagbemi who is on Sabbatical from the Federal University of Technology Akure became the pioneer Head of Department.
- OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT
The aim of the programme is to train skilled high level manpower in all aspects of Food Science and Technology.
The specific objectives are to train:
- skilled and managerial manpower for food and agro-allied industries
- students with entrepreneurial skills required to establish, manage and control small and medium food processing and agro-allied industries for value addition to available foods for local and international markets
- and equip graduates with sound scientific knowledge and technical understanding of local food production systems to enable good engineering design and fabrication of equipment for food processing;
- graduates with capacity for empowerment as a consultant to carry out scientific research and development procedures for reduction in post-harvest wastages of local foods through adequate design of storage facilities and, in food value chain and
- produce graduates that will be able to teach the application of Food Science and Technology using appropriate functional technology in tertiary institutions.
- GENERAL SERVICES AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The academic programmes and institutional activities of the Department are facilitated through lectures, tutorials, SIWES industrial visits, seminars and the laboratory practicals for the award of Bachelor in Food Science and Technology. The running and management of the Department depend on the following organs and administrative structure:
- The Head of Department and Chairman of Departmental Board.
The Department constitutes various committees to assist the Head of Department; such as the Academic Staff Review, Non-Teaching Staff Review, Admission Matters Examination Matters, Research Fund Management, Journal and Handbook Publication, SIWES and industrial visit and Seminars and other statutory and special matters.
