Brief History of the Department
The creation of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in 1999/2000 academic session led to the establishment of Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Management in the year 2001 although with two options of Forestry and Wildlife Management on one hand and Fisheries Management on the other hand embedded in it. However, based on the recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC), demerger occurred in 2016 which led to the Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife and Management standing alone. The Department is one of the six departments in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences with the mandate to provide professional level personnel qualified in Forest Resources and Wildlife Management. In establishing the department, the primary intention is to impart knowledge in a scientific but practical way to speed up the process of resolving problems confronting the society in the fields of Forestry and Wildlife. Over the years, the department has turned out graduates that are working in Tertiary Institutions, Research Institutes, Forest Reserves, National Parks, Financial Institutions spread all over the country, others have gone for their postgraduate programmes and some others are entrepreneurs.
Philosophy of the Programme
Philosophy of the Department is to produce graduates who have acquired appropriate knowledge and skills in techniques, learning and conducts in the areas of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management, as may be necessary for the upliftment of social, economic and environmental needs of our time. The curriculum is structured to meet the demands of academic activities and other educational resources, training, research and services for application to other similar situations locally and internationally.
Objectives
The objectives of the department are to produce graduates:
(i) with scientific knowledge/skill in forest resources and wildlife management and who are geared towards self- employment/reliance and with entrepreneurial ability to generate wealth;
(ii) who can easily explore forest and wildlife resources for industrial and domestic uses and as well as for the improvement of the environment;
(iii) who will work as professionals in forest resources and wildlife management in both the private and public sectors of the economy;
(iv) who will be adequately equipped to understand the nature and taxonomy of trees, non-wood/timber and wildlife species as well as conservation and domestication of wild animals;
(v). who can work as high quality forest and wildlife scientists instructors for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Universities and other institutions of higher learning in Nigeria.
